Making progress

Just a quick note to say that I am still here! I have had a busy few weeks with work, socialising, and sorting out a broken shower and washing machine, but I have managed to get back to some painting this weekend. I am still aiming to get some work completed in time for submission to the Open 22 in Leicester, and the Nottingham Castle Open, exhibitions.

I have a slight rising feeling of panic at the realisation that autumn is here, which subsequently means that the traditional submission deadline date for both of these exhibitions is looming. Sadly I have not yet been able to find out the exact submission dates for either exhibition. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the earliest submission date is (very) late October to give me a fighting chance of getting canvases completed in time.

Although I know that both deadlines will be very soon, until I know the exact date I will hold-off pressing the 'full scale action, last-minute scrambling, emergency station manning, staying up all night' panic button.

This weekend I have returned to a painting that I first put brush to canvas on way back near the start of this year. It first featured dangling from the wall in my tidied studio space back in April:

From these very green beginnings it went from going horribly wrong...

...to being partially rescued:

It is currently in situ on the studio floor:

I have more or less completed the basic blocking in that I wanted to do, and am just about to embark on working in some detail and beginning to build up the layered imagery. Although there is still a lot to do on this canvas I am quietly confident that I will be able to make steady progress. I am hoping to quite quickly build up a sense of depth as I work light and dark in around the mid-tone basic shapes that have been blocked out.

I am enjoying the process of painting this canvas as I am working intuitively from a very simple basic idea. I am not sure how this painting will develop; it could remain relatively simple or become a lot more complicated and intricate. Whatever the outcome there are a good few hours/days of painting to put into this one before it reaches any kind of conclusion.
